World Champion Nino Schurter triumphed in Massa Marittima. Eva Lechner confirmed her talent in the Open Women race
This weekend 2010 edition of Winter Championships run off in Massa Marittima. World Champion Nino Schurter defeated all his opponents while Marco Aurelio Fontana ended at 2nd place. Righettini performed well in Junior category, and Colnago's teammates Schneitter and Lechner dominated the Open Women race. Next Tuesday XX Maremma Cup will continue in Porto S. Stefano, and Sunday the first round of "Internazionali d'Italia" series is scheduled.

World Champion Nino Schurter's rainbow jersey lightened the event called "XX Maremma Cup" in Massa Marittima (GR), where this weekend Swiss biker dominated the Elite Men race, confirming as "2010 Winter Champion" and preceding Italian XCO Champion Marco Aurelio Fontana. Swiss biker attached during the 4th lap. The race was scheduled on 6 laps. Open Women race's final victory goes to Eva Lechner, who preceded the ex DH Champion Marielle Saner.

Such an intense day characterised the event called "XX Maremma Cup". Race 3 was dedicated to Junior and Elite-U23 Women categories. Talented Junior Andrea Righettini preceded Roger Waldner, who has fallen down during the first lap. Righettini leaded the entire race preceding for 4' his Swiss antagonist and for 7' Roberto Panzeri.

Since the beginning, Eva Lechner tried to take advantage on her antagonists, but her teammate Natalie Schneitter was able to overcome her during the 2nd lap.
Swiss biker punctured and mechanical problems prevented her from re-joining Lechner, who punctured too. Suddenly, Schneitter gave her wheel to Lechner, who was able to complete the race, preceding the ex DH Champion Saner for 2 minutes. Czech biker Tereza Hurikova ended at 3rd place, preceding Judith Pollinger and Virginie Pointet. Junior Women race's final victory goes to Swiss Lisa Mitterbauer.

But all insiders and fans were waiting for the Open Men race. Marco Aurelio Fontana tried to defeat Swiss bikers but in the 2nd lap Nino Schurter overcame him. Till the 4th lap, they competed paired but World Champion accelerated hardly and conditioned the final result. Schurter, who usually competes for Scott Team, was able to maintain very high pace his race.
2009 XCO World Champion ended with the timing of 1h48'29". 21" was the gap of Italian Champion Marco Aurelio Fontana, who crossed the line prancing his Cannondale mountain bike.
Ralph Näf competed alone for the entire race and ended at the 3rd place, preceding Tony Longo, who overcame his antagonists in the first laps. Florian Vogel completed the Top5 without impressing insiders and fans.

U23 category's final victory goes to Swiss Patrik Gallati. In the Open Men race, 2009 Junior World Champion Gerard Kerschbaumer finally made his exordium. Italian biker ended at the 20th place.

Tuesday the bikers will attend the kermesse in Porto S. Stefano, while next Sunday many of them will take part to the first round of "Internazionali d'Italia" series in Massa Marittima. Two Olympic Champions Martinez and Absalon announced their presence.

Project "XX Maremma Cup" is well promoted by Camera di Commercio of Grosseto in association with the Province of Grosseto and the Cities of Massa Marittima, Monte Argentario and Grosseto. Fondazione Monte dei Paschi di Siena usually supports economically the event.
